Hi Matt, thank you for the detailed survey , it’s very helpful . We will go ahead with the purchase , with eyes wide open . We don’t have any questions to ask at the moment , but if they arise we will run them past you .
The whole process was very easy.
Matt was very helpful during the survey including us in all aspects and his report was well structured and easy to follow and understand.
Additionally his help and advice following his report was excellent.

I contacted Matt to do an insurance survey on my 35 year old, 36ft sailing boat. Communication was good and we arranged to meet whilst the survey was being carried out. As in all surveys there are things that need correcting and potential problems being identified. Matt was very good at explaining all aspects of the survey.
The result was a very comprehensive and thorough survey report clearly identifying any problems, how to resolve them and the time span in which they should be done.
Surveys are always a bit traumatic however, Matts approach, help and advice made it a good experience.
Matts services are highly recommended. Les. Reviewed on facebook June 2019
Matt undertook a pre-purchase survey for me. He was very detailed and yet very clear with his report and recommendations. The survey found serious osmosis as well as other issues which resulted in me rejecting this motor yacht. I would recommend him without any hesitation. A very professional and helpful surveyor. I can’t praise Matt highly enough for the survey on my new boat. He was meticulous to a fault, happy to be left to do his thing and was invaluable on the sea trial. The fee was very reasonable and what price do you put on your peace of mind anyway? Thanks Matt. Peter E. Reviewed on Freeindex July 2017
I hired Matt for a pre-purchase survey in Southampton.
The boat, as it turned out, was a complete walkaway, with major structural issues that I had not discovered during my own inspection of the boat.
Matt was very thurough and took the time to explain to me the issues and advice me during the survey.
I was extremely pleased with his work and would recommend him to anyone looking for a first class surveyor. Sebastian. reviewed on facebook, Feb 2017
Matt provided an extremely professional service with regard to the pre purchase survey. He was most helpful on the day of the survey, spending time explaining and discussing points identified and recommended fixes to pragmatically resolve. The survey report was delivered the within 48 hours and was presented in a way that was easy to understand and extract key points that needed to be addressed with the Yacht Broker. “Matt provided an excellent survey service when I was buying my first boat – always a nerve-wracking experience! He was very flexible with timings, arrived promptly and conducted a very thorough inspection, taking time to explain key points to me and offer general boating advice. The report came through very quickly and was comprehensive, clear and made sensible recommendations. I would fully recommend Matt. ” Nick Bournemouth Review Jan 2016
We purchased our Dufour 36 from ‘Ancasta’ Chichester last April, and they recommended using Matt for our survey. We were travelling from Cardiff , and Matt was extremely helpful and easy to deal with. I attended for part of the survey, and he took time to talk me over the yacht andgave me a very detailed verbal description on the day. This was followed up naturally by a more detailed written report . Everything was dealt with very promptly , Matt was easy to contact throughout the process , and I would highly recommend his services .
I have been sailing for over 45 years and used the services of Matt West over the past 5 years. I have found his knowledge, advice and guidance to be the best I have experienced in my sailing years. What particularly sets him apart from his contemporaries is that he discussed and explained various parts of his finding with me as the survey progressed and did not arrive to do his work with any preconceived rigid ideas but rather worked with me to address his findings. In between surveys, I have had occasions to seek his advice and he has readily responded to my queries. I have no hesitation in recommending Matt. Ron Ryan Review Jan 2015
In May 2014 I purchased a Westerly Warwick Sailing boat manufactured in 1973. The purchase was conditional upon receiving a satisfactory marine survey report. I engaged Marine Surveys UK – Matt West – to do the work. The work was carried out promptly, efficiently and at a reasonable price. The good news is that its findings were also correct in that the vessel is sound and seaworthy as has been proved throughout the 2014 sailing season when it has been to sea many times, sometimes in adverse weather. Based on my experience I have no hesitation in recommending Matt to undertake marine surveys.Bill Hawthorn MIAgrE ASIC. Chief Engineer
“We engaged Matt to survey our 20 year old Southerly 115 that had been out of the water for nearly a year. In advance he explained what the survey would and would not cover and his promise of using plain English in the report was welcomed. We received a prompt and in-depth report that identified and prioritised the issues we needed to know about. The report was clearly written, photographs were used to show faults and he was happy to answer all our questions. We would be very happy to ask Matt to survey any future craft we buy and recommend him highly to anyone needing a survey.”Alison and Nick Boxall.Review Jan 2015

I recently commissioned Matt West (Marine Surveys UK) to carry out a survey and found him to be very friendly, helpful, professional and thorough! I attended the survey and Matt took plenty of time out to show me any defects and possible causes for future concern as he worked through the vessel. His online report arrived the next day and it was a very comprehensive document. I would have no hesitation in recommending him to carry out your survey requirements. As a family we have owned seven yachts after acquiring a 30ft Arpege in 1975. When we came to purchase our latest acquisition last November we used the services of Matt West of Marine Surveys . I can state quite honestly that he was the best, the most able, the most thorough surveyor we have ever used. He turned up on date, on time and carried out a very painstaking survey of the 41 foot yacht that we sought to purchase. His survey, when it came, was very clear, detailed and with a great deal of information. We are very pleased with the yacht which we subsequently purchased and would have no hesitation in recommending his services in the future. John Woods Review Jan 2015

Matt West carried out a pre purchase survey for me in late August 2014. He did an excellent job at very short notice — I wouldn’t hesitate to use him again and recommend him to colleagues. Very thorough indeed and very reasonably priced. The craft was a fairly elderly Leisure 23SL which was purported to be in excellent condition with a well equipped inventory. Having looked at several similar less desirable yachts I decided to have a survey on this one as my knowledge of sailing yachts fell well short of my motor boat experience. Matt soon found this craft to be un-seaworthy which came as a bitter disappointment. The bilge keels had suffered severe stress damage to the hull which had been quite cleverly disguised in a less than satisfactory repair.. The craft was a disaster waiting to happen. Matt organised the survey within 3 days including lifting out of the water and making the necessary arrangements liasing with the current owner, myself and the boat yard. The whole exercise was seamless and highly efficient. David O Review Jan 2015
Thank you for a very thorough and professional survey of our yacht Ellos Star, Hallberg Rassy 94 in particular the level of detail you undertook in examining the impact damage and subsequent repairs. Your report has given us a nice feeling of confidence in her ability to withstand the high seas. We have had the hull valves and skin fittings, you identified in your report as being suspect, replaced with corrosion resistant type as recommended, and now look forward to the 2015 sailing season. I cannot tell you how impressed I was with the service. I was in desperation as my potential buyer wanted an immediate survey and I was having a terrible time trying to arrange one with local surveyors. I happened by chance to find Matts number on the Internet and explained my plight. Matt offered to re arrange his schedule to accommodate me and with some tight scheduling with the marina the boat was lifted and a thorough hull survey done. Matt phoned me on completion to explain in detail the results of the survey and even though we had never met, he trusted me on face value to leave the money for him. Needless to say I sold the boat and cannot rate Matt highly enough, I will never hesitate to use or recommend his service to anyone. Highly professional and a nice bloke Too !5 Stars. “Earlier last year I decided to purchase my first boat, a 1976 Dufour 29ft. I knew at the time that the boat was in need of some TLC given her age and general condition and would become a bit of a “project”. What I was not sure about was whether or not it was a safe buy and if the amount of work that needed to be done was could be achieved. This is where Matt of Marine Surveys UK came in. His inch by inch and nut and bolt complete boat survey was broken down into easy to understand sections that graded the work to be done using a simple star grading system. This enabled me to firstly confirm my buying decision with the confidence and detailed assessment Matt had given but more importantly to plan and prioritise the work that needed to be done. Matt was also on hand post purchase to offer further advice, support and clarification when I got to particular points in my project. I would not hesitate to recommend Matt. He gave me the confidence to make my purchase, undertake the repairs and to have a boat now which has given me many happy hours of sailing.” Mark W Jan 2014
“Matt recently completed a survey on a Sealine S28 which I have now purchased. He went out of his way to be helpful and even accompanied us on the sea trial. He produced an extremely comprehensive survey report and so far 3 months on I have not found a single thing he has missed. He is an accomplished professional with an in depth knowledge of boats and has been an invaluable source of advice. I would have no hesitation in recommending him to you, you would have to go a long way to find anyone better.” Mike S. December 2013
As with most survey requests we needed it done yesterday and Matt was able to oblige. I accompanied Matt during the survey and was very grateful for his time and patience when he highlighted the construction details, sea cock positions, electronic systems etc etc. All of which boosted my confidence enough to complete the deal! His attention to detail (somehow he spotted two tiny blisters in the gel coat on the rudder which even when pointed out to me were difficult to see) and assurances about how serious ( or not in my case) some of the defects were and the likely cost to rectify were all extremely useful in my negotiations. Again giving me, an inexperienced boat owner, the confidence to proceed. As someone with many years experience in providing customer service to very demanding clients, I can absolutely recommend Matt and Marine Surveys UK for their outstanding levels of service and professionalism. I have used surveyors when buying boats previously and none came up to the standard of service provided by Matt. The survey was extremely thorough and demonstrated Matts’ superior knowledge of the industry and of individual boats, both structurally and mechanically.
The survey results were in plain English and work required was prioritised very clearly so that I was able to make an informed decision about the purchase.

Matt West from Marine Surveys UK did a detailed and comprehensive survey on our boat (Maxum 2500 sports cruiser) before we purchased it. “Matt surveyed two boats for me: a Sadler 34 which I’d owned for ten years and wanted checked and a year later a Maxi 1100 which I was buying. I was present when he surveyed the Sadler.
His reports were detailed, included pictures and were emailed within 24 hours. The reports described both necessary repairs (graded by importance) and guidance for future maintenance. He explained the significance of the comments during a subsequent telephone conversation. Prior to completion of purchase a few minor repairs were carried out on the Maxi (at the seller’s expense).
Excellent, comprehensive and prompt service.

We wouldn’t hesitate in recommending Matt. This was the first marine survey that we have been involved with.
Matt is professional and courteous putting us at ease throughout the procedure. He took time to explain everything that he was doing and did so in non technical terms. At the conclusion of the survey he held a full debrief ensuring we fully understood the findings.
We are now the proud owners of a new boat. Thank you.

19 Jul 2012Matt West conducted a very detailed survey of a 1970’s sailing vessel. I chose Matt because of his experience with a wide range of vessels and a knowledge of older boats. 21 Aug 2011Matt (at Marine Surveys) surveyed a Rival 32 for me during the summer of 2011. He was very thorough in every aspect and explained everything that I was unsure about in full detail. He was realistic about the boat in question and took account of the age and cost so that a fair survey was arrived at. I felt his friendly and no-nonsense approach helped me enormously in arriving at a decision to buy.I would recommend Matt and Marine Surveys without hesitation to anyone buying a boat. 11 Jul 2011Matt’s reports are very detailed, they’re written in plain English with a minimal of terminology to help myself (as a lay person) understand the issues at hand. His services are well priced and I’d recommend him to anyone thinking of buying a pleasure yacht on the South Coast. |

11 Jul 2011Marine Surveys produced an excellent survey on the boat I was planning to buy. Their survey was carried out with painstaking effort and diligence.Their report was extremely clear and easy to read. Most importantly their findings were ranked which made it easy to see what was of concern and what could be dealt with at a later stage. I was able to proceed with the purchase with great confidence in exactly what I was buying. Most importantly for me the survey was carried out with the minimum of fuss. 11 Jul 2011I commissioned Mat to survey a Najad 380 I wanted to buy in Italy. Mat arranged his flight and carried out the survey in one day, the service was fantastic and he gave a very clear concise survey which was both informative and gave me a clear way forward with the sale, Matt was more than happy to talk through the report with me on a number of occasions on the telephone over a number of days which was much appreciated as well. I would like to add that I contacted a number of surveyors who were either not interested in surveys overseas or very expensive. 2 Feb 2011I contacted the YBDSA for list of surveyors and from the list they provided, asked two for quotations for the work I wanted done. This was for a second opinion and detailed investigation of the condition of my hull. It’s not easy to make a good choice just from a web site and a review of their listed sales pitch! I selected Marine Surveys UK as they were fairly local, sounded OK and didn’t “over egg” the price – any other idea’s of how to do so apart from a recommendation?Matt worked hard and made several visits in order to work around the weather, did what I asked, provided much advice as we went round together and summarised with a written report. 31 Jan 2011I was not present at the survey so I found it a nice touch that Matt offered to retouch the hull moisture test patches. The current owner was present, however, and was obviously impressed with the level of inspection undertaken, as he commented that he intended to use Marine Surveys for the survey of his next boat purchase. The survey was undertaken within a few days of my request and a comprehensive report received in about 48 hours. 4 Jan 2011 When assessing my first boat, a Sadler 29, I urgently needed a survey before winter set in and held up the purchase. I sent out numerous emails to Marine Surveyors and Matthew West of Marine Surveys UK was the first to respond with a quotation which was inclusive of both travelling expenses and VAT. They were also able to commence work promptly. Having seen previous copies of surveys of other boats for sale, I was surprised to receive a very comprehensive, concise and illustrated (with 30 photographs) 20 page Report detailing the current condition of the boat with recommendation of repairs that needed to be undertaken in order of priority. I was extremely pleased with the thoroughness of the survey and the cost. Matts quotation turned out to be very competitive. Consequently, I have no hesitation in recommending Marine Surveys UK to anyone requiring a comprehensive survey at a sensible price, in fact, I recommended him to the previous owner of my boat, who has since engaged Matt to survey his newest acquisition. |

22 Dec 2010I was in the final stages of fulfilling a long held dream of buying a luxury houseboat to live on in London full time. There were issues around the sale that made me feel uneasy and I felt my inexperience was being exploited. I also had serious concerns over the viability of the steel lighter hull and the fact that the boat was in a very awkward mooring and couldn’t be moved to dry dock for ultrasonic testing. Matt gave me a great deal of unconditional advice and towards the end became quite the ‘agony aunt’. He went out of his way to research specific information and was consistently pleasant and professional. Matt helped me make the painful decision to walk away from the sale despite the fact I loved the boat. I wouldn’t hesitate to use Marine Surveys again or recommend them to anyone. I was so impressed that I paid Matt for his time although he didn’t expect me to. |

5 Oct 2010The prepurchase survey of my yacht was done at the earliest opportunity. I was on site and the surveyor kindly included me in to his thoughts as the survey progressed. This importantly gave me an insight into the boats structure and systems. The initial findings were communicated to me verbally, then in an email the next day after further research by the surveyor. The written report arrived in good time a few days later. The recommendations advised were rectified under the further supervision of the surveyor up to the time of the yachts removal from the boatyard and before completion. The advice received was always very considerate and, as the survey itself, communicated in straightforward jargonfree language. |

4 Oct 2010Buying our first yacht was a very big commitment and Matthew West from Marine Services was an enormous help to us. Because of the urgency of our survey, he dropped everything for us at short notice, was very thorough, not at all rushed, in fact he explained every little detail to us and showed us practical tips on how to do work on the hull and general tips. We were very pleasantly surprised at how friendly and helpful he was and made our purchase that much more enjoyable. We would definitely recommend him (in fact we have already) to others! When the time comes to buy our next yacht, we will be calling upon him again. Many thanks, Della and Sean Phillips |

4 Oct 2010Marine Surveys UK provided a pre-purchase survey on a Cornish Crabber 24 for me. This my second major boat purchase so I knew what to expect. However in this instance I was most impressed with the quality and the detail provided, including many photographs to show or highlight the items being reviewed. The survey was also expedited very promptly allowing me to complete the purchase very quickly. I would happily recommend them. |
